You are not alone. We can be brave together.

Many women in our families, churches, and the community at large have had abortions and are struggling. We want them to know they are not alone. Because so many women have had an abortion, chances are there are people that you encounter every day who are hurting from that experience. Through H.E.A.R.T., we at First Church offer the hope of Jesus to those who have participated in abortion.

1.21 Million Abortions occurred in 2018 alone.

Post-Abortion Syndrome (PAS) is a form of PTSD, and is the condition occurring after the abortion experience due to unresolved psychological and spiritual issues.

Abortion creates emotional and mental trauma not only for women, but men as well.

Emotional reactions following abortion are more common than physical side effects. It is commonly reported that the abortion affected them more then they ever anticipated.

What Is H.E.A.R.T.?
Who is H.E.A.R.T. For?

H.E.A.R.T. stands for Healing the Effects of Abortion Related Trauma, and is a biblically based recovery group for those who have been affected by an abortion decision. Our seven-week support group is designed to create a safe place for you to connect with men and women who have experienced what you are going through. It is our prayer that every person leaves with greater hope and peace in Jesus than when they first came in.

Is HEART for women only?

No! The man’s role or lack of role in the decision can create a stream of consequences that may accompany the man through the rest of his life. We express a warm welcome to those men who have been involved in any way with abortion.

Will this cost me anything?

No, the HEART recovery program is free of charge. The only cost will be your time and willingness to participate.

My abortion was many years ago. Can HEART still help me?

The emotions that can follow an abortion often get pushed down and set aside to be dealt with another time, or in the hope that they will go away on their own. The reality is that they are likely to resurface and cause pain and frustration in ways that are unexpected. HEART is a wonderful program that offers hope for past regrets, whether your abortion was last week or 50 years ago.

Is the HEART program confidential?

By the very nature of the mutual support group, members will share many experiences that are deeply personal. Confidentiality is of utmost importance between the leaders and group members, and between the group members themselves. Confidentiality is the central ethical issue of group support.

When and where do you meet?

The group meets every Tuesday for approximately two to two-and-a-half hours for seven to eight weeks. You should plan on allowing one to two additional hours of personal time each week to complete assignments and reflect on the material for each session. Our meetings take place at First Church in Sterling Heights, MI.

A Note From The Director

Welcome to FC H.E.A.R.T., my name is Telesha Gibbs. My husband and I serve on the pastoral staff at First Church in Sterling Heights, Michigan. HEART is a ministry that was birthed from the pain of my own abortion story, but more importantly MY VICTORY through Christ.

If you or someone you know is ready to heal from a past abortion, I urge you to make the first step, and contact us for more information. I look forward to taking  this journey with you!

HEART Graduate Testimonies

The HEART study helped me to realize that I had never dealt with the traumatic and negative effects that abortion caused in my life. The study facilitators offered gentle but firm confrontation with the truth of God’s word and how He felt about all lives. I learned I was not alone. I learned how to confess, accept God’s forgiveness and be set free from the heavy burden of the guilt, shame, and low self-esteem I had been carrying for so many years.

Because of God’s word, His never ending grace and mercy, the Heart Bible study and the group facilitators, I can proclaim that I am a woman who has been set free, no longer burdened, bound, or angry.

~ Malinda

8 years ago I made a decision that would forever alter my life. I wasn’t thinking about whether it was a life or not, I just didn’t know how I could go through with this pregnancy. The abortion didn’t fix anything, instead it only complicated my already broken life. I have never felt loss like that.

When I went through Heart, it changed my life. Today, I can truly say with all of me that I believe God is good and that no one is beyond his reach. He has taken my shame, my secret, and my sin and nailed them to the cross, inviting me to new life and new hope.

~ Rachel

After many years of silence, I finally confided in a friend from church about my past. She told me about the Heart ministry, a Bible study support group for women to be healed from abortion. God told me that I needed to go through the group, and allow Him to heal my heart. I met with the Heart leaders and went through the group. Through that study, God changed my life!
